Pride and Prejudice comic book adaptation sneak peek!

Marvel's posted the first five pages, and, in a word, HOLY MOLY.

I'm sorry to say this, but Mrs. Bennet looks like a drag queen and the five sisters look like the Pussycat Dolls. They did so well with the cover (above), but things are looking grim, dear readers....

Those look terrible! I've seen the Wizard of Oz comics, and they look so cute! What happened?

People think I'm being flippant when I say this, but I'm not--Marvel has three modes for drawing female characters: old lady, sweet little moppet, and supervixen. It's a one-size-fits-all system.

This is pretty terrifying, but I love the ridiculous look on Lydia's face on page two. What is with Darcy's lips in the last panel? The coloring is nice, but I have to agree that the Marvel house style is not suited for a story full of women. I wonder what audience they are trying to attract?

Well, based on the cover, I'd say they were trying to attract the same Austen fans who enjoy funky updates of her novels (like Clueless). But I have NO IDEA who might like a story with that interior artwork.

Unless you count people who want a Cliff Notes-with-pictures type of deal to get out of a teacher-assigned read of P&P, of course!
