This past Sunday was 2023's Public Domain Day, which marked the end of US copyrights on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s last few Sherlock Holmes stories (also Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse, but that's unlikely to make as much of a pop-culture-freebie splash). According to The New York Times, Circuit Judge Richard Posner, writing for a three-judge panel from the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, has declared that most (but not all) of Arthur Conan Doyle's dozens of Sherlock Holmes stories are now part of the public domain...

CBS is apparently planning a complete reboot of the Sherlock Holmes story: they've hired Jonny Lee Miller to be their Sherlock Holmes (which... okay), changed the setting to modern-day New York City, and cast Lucy Liu as Watson.
